Stir-fried ice-cream anyone? More commonly known as rolled ice-cream, this dessert originated in Thailand and has finally made it's way to Harare! If you're a fan of all things sweet, you need to make your way to Treat.
I’ll admit, even though it’s been around for a while, I only came across rolled ice-cream a little while ago and was excited when I found out it was available in Harare. A particularly warm Friday afternoon spent clearing out cupboards and lazing around in between turned into the perfect excuse for a trip to Treat.
The gourmet artisanal ice-cream parlour is based at the Food Lover’s Market Cafe in Glen Lorne, where it adopts some of the store’s peculiar charm and serenity. I don’t know what it is, but every time I shop there I always feel like I’m somewhere far off surrounded by open landscapes and cozy little farmhouses.
The café was warm and busy that day and we were greeted by a smiling Tendai, who gave us a quick explanation of how it all works. Watching the ice cream being made is as much an enjoyable part of the experience as finally getting to taste it. As newbies, we opted for the smaller cup size, which comes with one flavour and two toppings of your choice.
I went for an Oreo flavoured one, topped with chocolate chip cookies and wafers. Although it was a little on the sweet side, it was perfectly creamy and delicious. If you know you’ve got a strong sweet tooth, then this is the place for you. Not near Glen Lorne? Find them at UpMarket Farmers Market on Maasdorp Avenue every Wednesday and sometimes on Saturdays.
