There are a number of reasons breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While more and more people are becoming aware of its importance, not enough are making the right choices. As the first meal of the day, it only makes sense that it is as nutritious and filling as possible. Below is a list of common but unhealthy breakfasts and their healthier alternatives.

While cereals feature consistently on the breakfast table, they aren’t nutritious enough to get you through the day. A bowl of corn flakes, for example, is mostly made up of processed carbohydrates and simple sugars with very little protein. If you must have cereal, be sure to pair it with something else high in protein like eggs or a protein shake.

Oats, on the other hand, are a healthier alternative. Not only do they contain a decent amount of fibre and important minerals, they can also aid in weight loss. While oats do contain a fair amount of protein, you can boost this further by adding your favourite nut butter or protein powder.

Although this is a classic breakfast dish, bacon, sausage and eggs can be incredibly unhealthy. Processed meats are often linked to a number of chronic diseases including high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bowel and stomach cancer

A healthier alternative is avocado and egg on (whole-wheat) toast. The creamy texture of the avocado eliminates the need for butter while the egg (cooked in a non-stick spray) provides a good amount of protein. Some of you may be thinking, “Aren’t avocados high in fat?” While that is true, avocados contain unsaturated fat. This is the healthier alternative that our bodies need to function properly.

As tantalising and convenient as they may seem, pastries are never a good breakfast option. They are incredibly high in sugar and butter. The former can cause blood sugar spikes and premature hunger. The latter is incredibly high in saturated fats, which have been linked to heart disease and raised cholesterol levels.

As more and more people become health conscious, healthy alternatives to sweet classics are created! One common alternative to traditional pastries is banana-protein pancakes.
